Clearwater and St. Petersburg may be well-known as the home of some of the country’s best beaches, but there’s more to do here than just go to the beach. Plenty of activities are found throughout the area for families, adults and residents of all ages. Whether you’re new to the area or planning to relocate, you should become familiar with the top area attractions.
Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks
Another very popular attraction found in the St. Petersburg and Clearwater area is the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. This attraction includes many sponge boats docked at Tarpon Springs. Since the area was settled by Greek immigrants and they found sea sponges to be very plentiful, it’s home to many Greek restaurants, shops and bakeries. You can shop on Dodecanese Boulevard or enjoy an authentic Greek meal, as well.
Fort De Soto Park
One of the most breathe-taking parks in the entire state of Florida, Fort De Soto Park provides a beautiful beach and over 1,000 acres on Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It covers five islands and was voted as the “Best Beach for Families” by USA Today in 2014.
The park is more than just a place to go to the beach, however. It provides camping, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, boat launches, playgrounds and a historic fort. You may visit Fort De Soto Park for the beaches, but end up discovering so much more.
Dale Chihuly Collection
Art enthusiasts from all over the world come to the St. Petersburg and Clearwater area every year. Part of the reason is the Dale Chihuly Collection found in downtown St. Petersburg at the Morean Arts Center. Chihuly creates amazing glass works with exotic colors. Two of the most popular pieces in the collection include “Mille Fiore” and “Tumbleweed.”
The Dali Museum
Another reason art enthusiasts flock to the area every year is The Dali Museum. With an amazing collection of Salvador Dali art, this museum is one of the top attractions in downtown St. Petersburg. More than 2,000 works of art are on display within a beautiful building made up of over 1,000 glass panels.
Works of art found within the museum include watercolor, prints, photographs, oil paintings, drawings and much more. Along with the art, the museum provides many workshops and special programs for all ages.
Pier 60
A family-friendly attraction perfect for new residents, the sunset show held nightly is found at Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach. The daily festival starts at 4:30pm every day, as long as the weather cooperates. You will find all kinds of local art and crafts throughout, along with street performers and demonstrations. The playground will be busy with children and you can enjoy the Sunset Cinema free movies on select nights.
