What makes a city super cool? Expedia has taken the time to define cities that are and look for the ones that are doing things right. Cities that get props for being super cool do things like host interesting festivals, make districts for food-lovers, have a love for art, and are either a big city themselves or are close to one.

These cities make living so much easier, whether it’s providing entertainment that is walkable, giving you the perfect setting to dine, or having everything close enough together that a quick cab ride is all you need to access the fun. Our local Tampa, Florida made this exciting list at the #12 most super cool city to visit in the states and below you can see what elements of Tampa made it stand out among the whole country!

How the cities were ranked

Giving cities a “super cool” title requires that city to pull off something that many other cities haven’t been able to do. Major cities like NYC, LA, and Chicago are easy to call super cool because they offer so much to do and see, but those mid-sized cities that are often overlooked in their place offer thing that a huge city cannot.

Along with a better sense of community and the best of both worlds from small town features to big city access, small and mid-sized cities don’t have that overcrowded and unaffordable lifestyle. The cities on this list do fun things that any city can do, but will be less likely to pull off like these places can. You’ll find arts and food districts, young demographics, unique festivals, great transportation, farmer’s markets, and overall better crime ratings and livability than big metropolitans.

Tampa made the cut

Tampa makes the cut for Expedia’s super cool cities, and we couldn’t be more proud. Ranked at #12, Tampa was recognized for the obvious amazing weather and overall easygoing vibe compared to many Florida cities. You can easily get around driving unlike larger cities, and you can even access a Tampa CityPASS to make life even easier.

Tampa was recognized for festivals like the Florida Brewers Guild Craft Beers Festival and costumed ones like Gasparilla. For a more permanent attraction, Tampa features the exciting Tampa Theatre where you can catch a film from the 1920’s unlike today’s modernized theater experience. Tampa is also known for its Cigar City beer, Cuban sandwiches, and a visit to the SoHo/Hyde Park area.

Other exciting cities and why they were chosen

Who else made the list for super cool cities? You won’t find big metropolitans like NYC and Chicago. Instead, you’ll find Austin, Texas for its low crime rate, shopping districts, and SXSW festival and Seattle, Washington for being one of the best food cities, having amazing museums, and making festivals happen all year long.

Don’t forget the Carolinas where you’ll find Charleston, SC highlighted for dining, its markets, and its cultural festivals while Charlotte, NC is known for its food and culture. Don’t forget lesser known areas like Lawrence, Kansas for its hipster vibes, Davis, California for its safety when you want to get around with ease, Amherst, Massachusetts for its young demographic and appreciation for arts and food, and Santa Fe, New Mexico where you’ll enjoy farm-to-table dining just a Lyft ride away.

Expedia has chosen its super cool cities to visit in the US and Tampa was the top choice for Florida, coming before Jacksonville, Florida at #21.
