Palmetto Beach is hidden on McKay Bay, yet centrally located with easy access to major roadways including the I-4. The neighborhood offers a wide variety of housing options, transit service, bike paths, tree-line streets with sidewalks, and all of which are perfect for enjoying the great outdoors. Bordered by Ybor City, downtown Tampa, and the McKay Bay, this place is indeed special, and residents are quite proud to call it their home.

Since its early beginnings at the year 1867, the historic Palmetto Beach has already established itself as a neighborhood rich in three aspects: culture, diversity and history. It is indeed one of the true jewels in Tampa. The location gives a central position on the outskirts of Tampa’s urban center. For those families and young professionals who are looking for homes in the central business district of Tampa, the Palmetto Beach offers exactly what most people are searching for.

DeSoto Park & DeSoto Elementary School

Palmetto Beach is where one of the best public parks in Tampa can be found, and that is the DeSoto Park. The park allows the residents to enjoy the bay front, together with its full sports complex, swimming pool, skate park, and the community pavilion. This landmark is considered as the main gathering point for several community functions. The events celebrated at the park date back to President Teddy Roosevelt camping out with his Rough Riders on the site where the park stands today, before heading to Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

Just across the DeSoto Park is the DeSoto Elementary School. This is one of the first public schools in Tampa. It has recently been restored and improved, both in the physical and academic aspect. It is the result of the years and years of effort by the mayor’s office, the county school board, as well as the local community. Luckily for the residents of “The Beach”, it is a school that comes with a smaller capacity compared to most public schools. This ensures the parents that their children are given more attention from the teachers because of the smaller class sizes.

Brief History of Palmetto Beach

Established in the year 1867, the Palmetto Beach is a diverse waterfront neighborhood, rich in culture and history. A lot of families have lived in the area for many generations. The community grew up around the four cigar factories, the electric streetcar, and the famous DeSoto Park. And as previously stated, the elementary school has recently been renovated.

Today, it remains to be a thriving neighborhood.  A great number of people are searching for homes for sale in the area. There are many reasons why Palmetto Beach is a desirable place to live in. The location is great, the people are friendly, the community is well-maintained, and more.
