Introduction to Spanish Homes in Tampa FL

Spanish culture has deep roots in Tampa that date all the way back to the 1800s. Today, that culture is still felt in many neighborhoods throughout the Tampa area thanks to an abundance of charming Spanish-style homes that first started to dot the local housing market back in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Common Characteristics of Tampa Spanish Style Homes

Spanish-style architecture has been around as long as America itself. It borrows traits from the Romanesque design seen in many of Spain and greater Europe's 10th and 11th century buildings. In many cases, these homes have a Mediterranean feel, rising from single-story properties to two- and three-story dwellings with impressive and stately footprints. Spanish homes in Tampa commonly feature stucco exteriors, with red tile roofs made of clay or concrete that evoke Spanish colonial styles of the past. Interior features of Spanish style homes often include arched doorways, plaster walls, and ornate tile flooring. Other elements that are seen in many old-style constructions include wooden beams on the ceilings, wrought iron fixtures, and painted cabinets.

Just when you thought things were getting specific, there are actually multiple subtypes of Spanish-style homes. They are commonly organized into five categories: Mission Revival, Pueblo Revival, Monterey, Floridian, and Spanish Eclectic. The Floridian variation, as you might guess, is prevalent throughout Tampa and the rest of the State of Florida. It features an aesthetic that was born from the Spanish influence and is found in many older vintages of homes built at a time when the region was first being settled by Europeans.

The Spanish Style Home Market in Tampa

Tampa's property market is extremely diverse, boasting a range of architectural styles from around the world. Spanish designs are particularly common in the neighborhoods of Ybor City, Hyde Park, and Seminole Heights. In fact, some of the city's most stunning Spanish-style homes are found in these areas, with some of them having been constructed as far back as the late 1800s.

Plot size varies, as can the number of bedrooms and bathrooms available. The cheapest options on today's market will likely start around $300,000, while more expensive multi-million dollar Spanish homes can be found too. These larger estates not only include plenty of private outdoor space, but often boast stunning features such as private swimming pools, gated entrances, and lush gardens.
